A good tamp compresses the coffee evenly in the basket so water flows through it evenly. Uneven tamping leads to channelling, where water finds the easy path and your shot tastes sour or harsh. The right tamper makes consistency much easier.
We stock tampers from ECM, Rhino Coffee Gear, Pesado and Nucleus, including height-adjustable and self-levelling designs that help you tamp flat every time.
Your tamper should fit snugly inside your basket with only a small gap at the edge. Many machines use 58mm baskets, but some use smaller sizes, so check your machine before ordering. Tell us the make and model and we will confirm the fit.
Protect your bench with a tamper mat or station, and see the full espresso gear range for distribution tools and knock boxes.

A self-levelling tamper rests on the rim of the basket so the base stays flat as you press, which helps prevent uneven tamps.
Firmly and consistently is more important than force. Focus on keeping the tamper level and using the same pressure each time.
Only if your machine uses 58mm baskets. Check your portafilter or send us your machine model to confirm.
